Local Chemistry Students Visit the San Onofre Plant

A group of 80 chemistry students from Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo recently visited the San Onofre Nuclear Plant for an up-close and personal look.

Accompanied by teachers, administrators, and representatives from the Capistrano Unified School District, the students were escorted on a walking tour by subject matter experts at the plant. We set up information booths on topics such as How a Nuclear Power Plant Works, Dry Cask Storage, Radiation Protection, and Industrial Safety. In addition, representatives from Southern California Edison's Transmission & Distribution unit were on hand to present their highly popular electrical-safety demonstration.

"Tours like this serve as an important opportunity for us to share our commitment to safely decommissioning SONGS," explains Jim Madigan, director of Nuclear Oversight Safety Culture and Regulatory Affairs. "Decommissioning is a long, regulated process that can raise concerns among our neighbors, and we believe that public outreach and education – including the regular tours we host – play an important role in alleviating any concerns."
