ROSEMEAD, Calif., Oct. 26, 2017 — The San Onofre Community Engagement Panel will receive a presentation from the Navy regarding San Onofre nuclear plant decommissioning at the panel’s quarterly meeting next Thursday in Laguna Hills.

Tom Caughlan, a panel member and regional liaison officer for the Marine Corps, will address several decommissioning issues related to the Navy’s role as owner of the land occupied by San Onofre. These include the easement for the 85-acre nuclear plant site, the lease for the Navy’s adjacent Mesa property that was used by San Onofre for warehousing and office space and plans for restoring the land for military training.

In addition, Tom Palmisano, vice president and chief nuclear officer for Southern California Edison, the decommissioning agent on behalf of San Onofre’s owners, will provide a decommissioning update.

The regular quarterly meeting will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Laguna Hills Community Center, 25555 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Hills. Staffed information booths will be open from 4:30-5:30 p.m. There will be a public comment period and the meeting will be livestreamed via songscommunity.com.

SCE announced in June 2013 that it would retire San Onofre Units 2 and 3 and had begun the process to decommission the facility. SCE has established core principles of safety, stewardship and engagement to guide decommissioning.
