Aug. 3, 2018 Canister Loading Incident

Southern California Edison is overseeing the movement of spent nuclear fuel from the two spent fuel pools at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station to dry cask storage. This is a critical step that will allow the further decommissioning of the plant and restoration of the site and return to the U.S. Department of the Navy.

The spent fuel from SONGS Units 2 and 3 is loaded into Multi-Purpose Canisters (MPCs, or “canisters”), robust containers made of 5/8” stainless steel and welded shut. The MPCs are then moved to the Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation by our vendor. The final evolution for each MPC is the lowering (or “downloading”) of the MPC into a Cavity Enclosure Container, until the canister is resting at the bottom of the CEC.
