An Update from Tom Palmisano on Fuel Transfer Operations
The transfer of spent nuclear fuel from pools to dry cask storage has been on hold since the Aug. 3, 2018 canister downloading event at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. During that event, a canister of spent nuclear fuel came to rest on a component of its cavity enclosure container known as the shield ring. The canister was eventually successfully downloaded with no impact to the health or safety of employees or the public.
Since Aug. 3, Southern California Edison and its contractor, Holtec, have undertaken a significant review of fuel transfer operations at SONGS and implemented key changes to procedures, training, oversight and more. Tom Palmisano, vice president of external engagement, talks about those changes, and the path forward, in the video below.
