Mitigation measures protect local species

On a cool and windy evening last week, Ray Romero, SDS wildlife biologist, and Drew Stokes, a bat specialist, manned their posts on the southside of the Unit 3 Turbine Building looking for signs of bat colonies.

While individual bats aren’t a protected species, maternity bat colonies are protected in California. One of the mitigation measures as part of the Environmental Impact Report issued by the California State Lands Commission is to check for such colonies 14-days prior to demolition activities.

Similar surveys were performed prior to dismantlement of the diesel generator buildings and the Unit 2 Turbine Building.

Environmental stewardship is a core decommissioning principle at SONGS.
