How to Prepare an Emergency Kit

Preparing for an emergency is the smart thing to do and every family should have a disaster preparedness kit. A disaster preparedness kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.

Here's what to stock in your emergency kit.

Water: Three Day Supply

  • One gallon per person per day per person
  • Additional for pets

Food: Three Day Supply

  • Ready-to-eat canned meats, soups, juices, fruits and vegetables
  • High-energy foods such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, energy bars and trail mix
  • Special food items needed for infants, the elderly and those with special dietary needs

Tools & Supplies

  • Flashlights
  • Portable, battery-operated radios
  • Extra batteries
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • First aid kits and instructions
  • Small amount of cash or travelers checks
  • Non-electrical can opener
  • Map of area
  • Personal hygiene items including diapers and antibacterial wipes
  • Whistle

Clothes, Shoes & Bedding

  • Sturdy shoes
  • Rainwear, hats and gloves
  • Blankets and sleeping bags

Medicines & Specialty Items

  • Prescription medications
  • Extra pair of glasses or contacts
  • Special needs equipment
