ROSEMEAD, Calif., Aug. 18, 2026 — The offsite storage and disposal of used nuclear fuel is among the topics that will be addressed by experts from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy at a meeting of the SONGS Community Engagement Panel on Aug. 27. Technology that may be used to monitor the integrity of used nuclear fuel canisters also will be covered.

Southern California Edison applauds the DOE’s July 28 announcement regarding the selection of five finalist states that have signed memoranda of understanding with DOE to host Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses that include used nuclear fuel storage and disposal facilities. Juan Uribe, DOE senior program manager for the Integrated Waste Management Program, will discuss the program and next steps.

Jorge Narvaez, a nuclear engineer with DOE’s Integrated Waste Management Program, will discuss progress on technology designed to monitor used nuclear fuel canisters including a potential demonstration project at SONGS. SCE nuclear engineer Mike Bryson will provide additional information about the current inspection program in place at SONGS as well as a test canister that may be used in the demonstration.

“We look forward to hearing from the DOE on these important topics as our community continues to learn more about national and state efforts to address the need for offsite storage and disposal of used nuclear fuel from SONGS in the near term,” said volunteer CEP Chair Dan Stetson.

The presentation also will include updates on Spent Fuel Solutions coalition activities and the progress of demolition work at SONGS.

The virtual meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. Pacific time via Microsoft Teams. Members of the public can watch the meeting by visiting SONGScommunity.com, where they will find a link to join and information about how to register for the one-hour public comment period.

In June 2013, when SCE announced the retirement of SONGS Units 2 and 3, the company established the core principles of safety, stewardship and community engagement to guide the decommissioning.
