ROSEMEAD, Calif., Oct. 29, 2026 — Demolition progress of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) will be the focus of the next public meeting of the SONGS Community Engagement Panel. With 54 of the 66 site structures demolished, SONGS Decommissioning Solutions (SDS) Executive Sponsor Joe Nowak will discuss the remaining focus areas as SDS prepares to remove the domes starting in 2027. Nowak will also brief the panel on the sorting, packaging, and shipping offsite of industrial waste as well as the recent increase of demolition water releases. More than 750 million pounds of crushed concrete, steel and debris have been shipped to facilities via 3,219 railcars. Each rail car carries the equivalent of five trucks; the use of rail reduces emissions by eliminating thousands of truck trips.

Considering recent storms that caused erosion and damage to residential and commercial structures along the coastline, SCE will share how SONGS is designed to withstand extreme climate events. Additionally, SCE staff will provide updates on environmental monitoring and demolition water releases, as well as growing federal momentum on the offsite disposition of used nuclear fuel.

The virtual meeting will begin at 4:00 p.m. Pacific time via Microsoft Teams. Members of the public can watch the meeting by visiting SONGScommunity.com, where they will find a link to join and information about how to register for the one-hour public comment period.

In June 2013, when SCE announced the retirement of SONGS Units 2 and 3, the company established the core principles of safety, stewardship and community engagement to guide the decommissioning.
