Community Engagement Panel to Meet Thursday on Nuclear Plant Decommissioning
ROSEMEAD, Calif., Aug. 25, 2014 — The public is invited to attend the regular meeting on Thursday of the Community Engagement Panel (CEP) formed to advise the co-owners of the San Onofre nuclear plant on decommissioning the facility. The meeting will be from 6-9 p.m. at the Quantum Learning Network Conference Center in Oceanside.
The CEP is expected to discuss a draft plan to decommission the plant called a Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report (PSDAR), an updated $4.4 billion cost estimate for the project and a related environmental report. Southern California Edison (SCE), the majority owner of San Onofre, plans to submit those documents, along with a fuel management plan, to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission next month.
The estimate includes the cost to decommission San Onofre Units 2 and 3, management of the used nuclear fuel until it is removed from site by the U.S. Department of Energy and restoring the site pursuant to a lease and easement with the Navy, which owns the land.
About $4.1 billion has been collected in San Onofre decommissioning trust funds established more than 30 years ago. Based on continued investment returns on those funds, SCE has determined that its share of the San Onofre trusts are fully funded and require no further contributions from customers at this time. SCE will return any unused funds to customers at the end of decommissioning activities.
