ROSEMEAD, Calif., Nov. 6, 2025 — Demolition progress of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) will be the focus of the next public meeting of the SONGS Community Engagement Panel. With 47 of the 62 site structures demolished, Jim Peattie, SONGS general manager for site operations, will discuss the remaining focus areas as preparations are made to remove the domes starting in late 2026. These areas include final removal of large components from inside the containment domes, segmentation of the Unit 2 Reactor Vessel, and controlled building demolition.
Additionally, SCE staff will provide updates on recent decommissioning activities, including environmental monitoring and recent regulatory inspections.
The virtual meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. (PT) via Microsoft Teams video conference. Members of the public can view the video conference by visiting SONGScommunity.com, where they will find a link to the Microsoft Teams meeting and can register to participate in an hourlong public comment period.
In June 2013, when SCE announced the retirement of SONGS Units 2 and 3, the company established the core principles of safety, stewardship and community engagement to guide the decommissioning.
