Dismantlement Progress, State Advocacy for Spent Fuel Storage Solutions Key Topics for Sept. 5 San Onofre Community Engagement Panel Meeting
ROSEMEAD, Calif., Aug. 29, 2024 — Southern California Edison’s decommissioning general contractor will discuss the latest dismantlement work at the San Onofre nuclear plant on Sept. 5 during the next public meeting of the Community Engagement Panel (CEP). SONGS Decommissioning Solutions just reached another significant milestone with the demolition of the control building, the plant’s nuclear operation center.
Spent Fuel Solutions coalition co-chairs, Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley and San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, will report on the California Senate’s Aug. 5 adoption of Assembly Joint Resolution 18, sending a strong message to congressional leaders about the importance of delivering off-site storage and disposal solutions for spent nuclear fuel. The coalition is actively engaged with the U.S. Department of Energy, participating in recent shake table demonstrations in San Diego County and supporting its consent-based siting process for federal consolidated interim storage facilities for spent fuel.
Additionally, SCE will provide the latest updates on the shipment of demolition waste off-site, including the recent Unit 2 and 3 components called “pressurizers,” as well as the process for cleaning up wastewater before making releases in compliance with stringent federal regulations.
The virtual meeting will begin at 2 p.m. (PDT) via Microsoft Teams video conference. Members of the public can view the video conference by first visiting SONGScommunity.com, where they will find a link to the Microsoft Teams meeting and can register to participate in the public comment period.
When SCE announced the retirement of San Onofre Units 2 and 3 in June 2013, it established the core principles of safety, stewardship and engagement to guide the decommissioning.
