San Onofre Community Engagement Panel Meeting to Focus on Safe Dry Cask Storage of Spent Fuel at Plant

ROSEMEAD, Calif., Oct. 13, 2022 — The San Onofre Community Engagement Panel (CEP) will receive a briefing on Southern California Edison’s spent fuel management defense-in-depth program at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station at its next quarterly meeting on Oct. 20. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. and take place via Microsoft Teams video conference.

A periodic focus topic for the CEP, SCE will provide an update on the maintenance and inspection modules of its program, which also includes the Aging Management Program regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Recent positive inspections of the San Onofre TN-NUHOMS system and industrywide results will also be discussed.

Other topics include the latest progress on decommissioning work at the site, with a focus on environmental stewardship and monitoring, and an update from the Action for Spent Fuel Solutions Now coalition on efforts to advance off-site solutions for the spent fuel storage and disposal.

Members of the public can view the meeting video conference by first visiting SONGScommunity.com, where a link to the meeting is provided, as well as register to provide comments during the meeting.

When SCE announced the retirement of San Onofre Units 2 and 3 in June 2013, it established the core principles of safety, stewardship and engagement to guide decommissioning.
