SONGS Community Engagement Panel Meeting to Focus on Environmental Stewardship as Decommissioning is Halfway Complete

ROSEMEAD, Calif., March 16, 2023 — The SONGS Community Engagement Panel (CEP) will receive a briefing on Southern California Edison’s (SCE) environmental stewardship and the status of decommissioning the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) at its next quarterly meeting March 23. The hybrid meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Laguna Hills Community Center in Laguna Hills and online via Microsoft Teams video conference.

SCE will provide an update on activities related to environmental stewardship during the decommissioning project, including air monitoring during excavation and the process for cleaning up and discharging wastewater. SCE also will provide updates on the latest decommissioning work at the site, which is officially more than halfway finished. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.

The SONGS CEP also will receive a briefing from the Spent Fuel Solutions coalition which is working to galvanize local, regional and national support for federal solutions to the offsite storage and disposal of spent fuel from nuclear sites such as SONGS.

Members of the public can view the meeting video conference by first visiting SONGScommunity.com, where a link to the Microsoft Teams meeting is provided, as well as register to participate in public comment.

When SCE announced the retirement of SONGS Units 2 and 3 in June 2013, it established the core principles of safety, stewardship and engagement to guide the decommissioning.
