Southern California Edison to Discuss Funds Related to Decommissioning and More at Nov. 7 San Onofre Community Engagement Panel Meeting
ROSEMEAD, Calif., Oct. 31, 2024 — Southern California Edison will discuss funding for decommissioning, offsite disposal of spent nuclear fuel and cost recovery for onsite spent fuel management during the next public meeting of the Community Engagement Panel (CEP).
Katrina Foley, Orange County Supervisor and Spent Fuel Solutions (SFS) coalition co-chair, and Kristal Jabara, Director of Community Relations for San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, SFS coalition co-chair, will report on a new bill by Reps. Mike Levin, D-Calif., and August Pfluger, R-Texas, that would amend the Nuclear Waste Policy Act to create a more durable federal spent fuel management program. They will also preview a Nov. 21 webinar, to be co-hosted by the coalition and the CEP, at which Levin will discuss the proposed legislation.
In addition, SCE will provide updates on several topics, including dismantlement activities, the Units 2 and 3 pressurizer shipment, groundwater monitoring for tritium and ways the community can stay informed.
The virtual meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. PDT via Microsoft Teams video conference. Members of the public can view the video conference by visiting SONGScommunity.com, where they will find a link to the Microsoft Teams meeting and can register to participate in the public comment period.
When SCE announced the retirement of San Onofre Units 2 and 3 in June 2013, it established the core principles of safety, stewardship and community engagement to guide the decommissioning.
